At Year's End...A Message from MHA President Kim Gibson

2017 was quite the year for the The Mississippi Humanist Association (MHA)!

The MHA has grown a lot this year, in many ways. On behalf of the MHA Board of Directors, many thanks to everyone for all of the support the MHA received this year, and welcome to all of the new members that joined the MHA this year! I just want to say thank you to each and every one of you for making this year a fantastic year for the MHA. I will try and keep it brief, but I just wanted to touch on some of the accomplishments and "high spots" for the MHA in 2017.

With your generous support, the MHA hosted its first special events this year. In May, the MHA welcomed the host of The Thinking Atheist, Seth Andrews, and we ended the year hosting author/filmmaker Chris Johnson and the Mississippi premier screening of A Better Life: An Exploration of Joy and Meaning in a World Without God in November. We hope to make Mississippi a destination for secular speakers, and with your continued support, we can host more fantastic events here in Mississippi.

In October, the MHA co-sponsored a rally with Organizing for America (OFA) that was held at the MS Capitol. The rally was well attended and covered, and we hope to build on this success. The MHA can partner and participate with other progressive and inclusive organizations here in Mississippi on the issues that matter to ALL Mississippians.

With the great support from humanists and new members in the Hattiesburg area, the MHA now is having a monthly Sunday Brunch gathering in Hattiesburg, our first regular event outside the Jackson metro area. If all goes well, this event will continue monthly, and we can then build other activities and events for the Hattiesburg/south Mississippi region!

Because we had such a great year, I could go on, but I did say I’d try and keep it brief. In the coming year, the MHA will continue to work on building a strong and supportive community for humanists here in Mississippi. Together, with your support, we can help one another, help our fellow Mississippians, and let Mississippi know that we believe in good!

On behalf of the MHA Board of Directors and myself, thank you for making 2017 a great year for the MHA! Without your support, none of these great events would have been possible. The MHA board and I are looking forward to the MHA continuing the momentum in the upcoming year.

We are also looking forward to seeing you at the Annual Membership Meeting in February; stay tuned for more details.  If you would like to serve the growing humanist community in Mississippi, we have the perfect opportunity - there will be two board positions up for election at the meeting. Please consider becoming a member of the board, as the MHA is possible only with the active participation of its members. Come help make the MHA the best it can be, and let's build on the success of 2017!

May your 2018 be filled with love, laughter, joy and health!

Best regards, and best wishes for the best year yet!

Kim Gibson
