The third Annual Membership Meeting of the Mississippi Humanist Association (MHA) was held this past Saturday evening, February 24th, at The Flamingo in Jackson, MS. Turn out for the yearly get together was great, and we welcomed members from as far away as Picayune, MS! Members and guests enjoyed a catered social hour, and then elections were held for two (2) seats on the MHA Board of Directors. The MHA saw the re-election of Stephen Frank as Treasurer, and the election of new board member and Communications Officer, Amy Blue. Welcome aboard, Amy, and congratulations to you both!
2017 was a fantastic year for the MHA, and President Kim Gibson recapped some of the successes, such as hosting Seth Andrews, of The Thinking Atheist, and screening the film “A Better Life…” with director Chris Johnson. MHA Secretary Tom Dennis reported that the MHA saw tremendous growth in 2017, as MHA membership doubled from 2016. Treasurer Stephen Frank advised about the MHA’s finances, and outgoing Communications Director, Patrick Jerome, talked about his time on the board and what it takes to keep the MHA going in his farewell address.
After the elections, we enjoyed a fun presentation from Patrick about the Marvel comic book pantheon of gods titled More Than Thor: The Pantheons of Marvel Comics.
The MHA has come a long way from the living room in Flowood where it started. The MHA will continue to work hard on behalf of humanists in Mississippi, building a strong humanist community, educating the public about humanism, and doing good for goodness’ sake, as the MHA has done since its "official" start in 2015.
To everyone who has become a member of the MHA and helped to make the mission of the MHA happen, thank you for your support of humanism and the MHA. The MHA is looking forward to making 2018 another great year for humanists in Mississippi!
