Mississippi Humanist Newsletter - December 2018

The holiday season is upon us, and that can lead to some stress for humanists. From family visits to being accused of engaging in a “war on Christmas,” humanists often feel isolated in the land of Christmas trees and nativity scenes.

We recently tackled these topics on our blog. Check out our post titled, “Surviving the Holidays as a Humanist” for some helpful tips on navigating those awkward moments around the dinner table.

Also, read our post titled “The Truth About Christmas – Little-Known Facts About the Holiday” for some information you can use if anyone accuses you of fighting a war on Christmas.

The MHA would also like to wish you a happy holiday season. While this can be a stressful time of year, it’s also the perfect time to do some good for your community. There are so many ways to give back this time of year. Donate to families that can’t afford Christmas presents, help at a shelter, or serve a holiday meal to someone in need.

Charity is the true reason for the season. How are you going to give back this holiday season?

The date has been set for the annual MHA Membership Meeting and Elections. The meeting and elections will be held on February 16 at a venue to be determined at a later date.

Three board positions are up for election. We will be holding elections for MHA President, Vice President, and Secretary.

Please remember these volunteer positions play a vital role in ensuring the MHA remains strong in Mississippi. We need five members on the board to run on all cylinders.

If you would like to run or nominate someone you think would be a good fit, email the MHA at mha@mshumanists.org.

We look forward to hearing from you! With your help, 2019 can be the best year yet!

November Event Round-Up

The weather might have been chilly in November and early December, but that didn’t keep our members from coming out to connect with other humanists and support the MHA.

We saw many familiar faces, had lots of laughs, and also enjoyed some delicious food. Thank you to everyone who took the time to stop by a brunch or happy hour during these busy holiday months.

We started the month off at Cotton Blues in Hattiesburg. We hadn’t been to Cotton Blues for a while, and we have to say, the brunch was amazing. The only thing better than the food was the conversation.

Next, we went to Capitol Grill in Jackson for MHA Humanist Happy Hour. While the turnout was a little smaller than usual, we had a great time catching up with our friends.

Finally, we headed into December with MHA Second Sunday Brunch at Corner Bakery Café in Flowood. We had so much fun catching up with everyone.

Keep track of our events on our website. Visit the event page to find out where we will be next.

It is more important than ever to join the MHA. There is strength in numbers, and with your help, we can create a stronger community and a stronger voice in the state of Mississippi. Yearly membership is only $25 for individuals and $40 for families. As a member, you will help in shaping the MHA mission and meet some new friends at the same time. Also, your membership dues will help us make an impact in the state. Every dollar of donations and fees work to support humanism in Mississippi.

For more information about joining the MHA, renewing your membership, or donating to support humanism here in Mississippi, please check out our website at www.mshumanists.org.
