A Better Life Comes to Jackson
November 19th at 2:00 PM
Millsaps College - Gertrude Ford Academic Complex (Room 215)
Soon you will be able to meet author/filmmaker Chris Johnson and view his documentary film, A Better Life: An Exploration of Joy & Meaning In A World Without God, at a FREE showing in Jackson!
Thanks to your donations, the Mississippi Humanist Association (MHA) has made arrangements to bring this worldwide phenomenon of a documentary to Mississippi.
Even better, thanks to the generous intervention of Millsaps College, we’ve been given the perfect space to screen this film - a screening auditorium at the Gertrude Ford Academic Complex (Room 215).
A Better Life is the perfect film to show your friends and family members who ask “So what does that mean?,” when you tell them you’re an atheist. Author and filmmaker Chris Johnson spent years interviewing famous (and not-so-famous) atheists and nonbelievers, and travelling to beautiful locales to show the beauty and wonder of a world that does not require anything supernatural. Not only will we view the film, we’ll discuss the film and Chris’ book, A Better Life: 100 Atheists Speak Out on Joy & Meaning in a World Without God, which inspired the film. A Better Life has been shown in more than 60 cities on four continents, but this will mark the first time this film has come to Mississippi.
The Mississippi Humanist Association is pleased to present this event free of charge, and we hope you will attend for a great afternoon of learning more about humanists, atheists and the values that they live by every day!
Please consider making a donation to the MHA to help sponsor this great event, and others like it in the future. Your donations are ALWAYS appreciated, as your donations and memberships are our only sources of income.
Please join the MHA for this great free event, and bring a friend! See you there!
Humans helping humans
November is for giving, so let’s help our fellow humans! In lieu of Second Sunday Brunch in November, please join us on the second Saturday, November 11th, at the Mississippi Food Network (MFN) on Beatty Street in Jackson, to pack boxes of food for distribution.
This is a family friendly event, but children must be at least 8 years old to participate. MFN recommends we dress in layers and wear closed toe shoes. We’ll need a headcount, so please RSVP on Facebook, Meetup, or e-mail.
We will be at MFN from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and we hope you will join us in helping to pack boxes to be given to those in need. See you there!
MHA Hattiesburg Field trip
Due to popular demand, a few MHA members and officers made their way to Hattiesburg to visit and work on starting regular humanist activities there and on the coast, and we were quite pleased with the amazing turnout at the Half Shell Oyster House! We’re excited to return in November, and to continue this humanist momentum in the southern part of the state!
MHA Humanist Happy hour
Thanks to everyone who came out through the Lakeland traffic to the Mellow Mushroom in Flowood to enjoy some pizza and some good company. Many good discussions were begun, and we handed out plenty of free MHA stickers! Don’t forget to send us an email if there’s a venue you think we’re overlooking!
Take Down This Flag Rally
The “Take Down This Flag Mississippi” Rally was held on October 21, 2017 at the Mississippi Capitol in Jackson, Mississippi. The rally to support changing the official Mississippi state flag was organized by Organizing for Action-MS Jackson (OFA), and the Mississippi Humanist Association was pleased to partner with OFA, Indivisible MS and others in this grassroots effort to demand a new flag for all Mississippians.
Many thanks to everyone that joined us at the Capitol, and remember, the rally is the beginning, not the end of our efforts. The MS Legislature convenes in January, and they are currently preparing bills for session. Reach out to your state representatives and senators and let them know you believe Mississippi deserves a better flag, one that represents all Mississippians!
Let’s all come together, do the work, and make it happen! #TakeDownThisFlagMississippi

Our first Hattiesburg outing was so much fun last month, we decided to do it again! The MHA is working to expand our events outside of the Jackson area, and you can help - if you want to know how, join us for the MHA Sunday Brunch.
As we get MHA events started on the coast and in Hattiesburg, social events like this are great a way to get connected to like minded people.
And we’re looking at you, coasties! We're hoping the weather is great for patio seating. Just look for the silver colander! Please RSVP via Facebook or Meetup or replying to this email, so we can let the restaurant know how many people are coming.
MHA humanist happy hour
The Bulldog: Ridgewood Road, Jackson
The MHA Humanist Happy Hour returns to where it all began - Jackson’s Bulldog Pub. In order to mingle and be more casual, we’re going to hang around a single section and not tie up a large table. Just look for familiar faces from past meetups, or the silver colander.
