Gods and Spaceships - An Afternoon of Science Fiction

The Mississippi Humanist Association (MHA) presentation of Dr. Patrick Hopkins’ discussion, Gods and Spaceships: Science and Technology in Science Fiction, took place at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS on Saturday, October 7.

Dr. Hopkins discussed the various religious themes, metaphors and allegories in science fiction such as Star Trek and Stargate. Everyone had a great time learning about the different devices, such as the “false god trope”, and we touched on ideas such as transhumanism.

Many thanks to Dr. Hopkins for a great presentation, and many thanks to all that joined us for this great afternoon discussion of science fiction and philosophy!

The MHA provides opportunities for humanists and non-humanists alike to learn more about humanism and other topics of interest to the humanist community. The MHA depends on your support, through your memberships and donations, to make events like this possible, so please consider joining or donating to the MHA, so we can continue to present events like this here in Mississippi.
